Lives in Shadows: Albino Families in Tanzania

Central Morogoro. A Black mother and her albino child sheltered in a single rented room after losing her husband. Here, the sun is not merely a climate condition, but a persistent threat. Happiness’s motherhood is an uninterrupted vigil confined between doorsteps and the narrow shade of courtyards. The reflex to protect her child from the scorching light and social isolation leaves the mother to face the harshness of the outside world entirely alone. The entire line of defense rests within a single room, on the shoulders of one woman.

The hills of Bigwa. An earthen house without electricity or security. The place where the cliché of the 'dependent albino' collapses. Yudosya is an albino mother who took over the fields following her husband’s death. An unprotected body defying the sun to provide for her physically more resilient Black children. The severe lesions on Yudosya’s skin are not a mark of resignation, but the physical toll of working the land and holding on to life.
