Every shift begins with a silent farewell left at the door. Once stepping over the threshold, returning home is merely a possibility. Throughout the unfolding 24-hour shift, no one knows where the next call will come from; but once it arrives, everything changes in seconds.</p>

The product of more than a decade of documentation, Through the Fire focuses not on waiting, but on action itself—on the raw reality of intervention. The camera tracks the Istanbul Fire Department at the epicenter of disaster. These frames offer no glorification; they are unyielding documents depicting spaces engulfed in flames and the military discipline operating with composure amidst chaos. They record, in the starkest terms, what fire destroys and who stands before it to face it.</p>

Between Two Waves

Along the shores of Freetown, Sierra Leone, time is measured not by the hands of a clock, but by the tides of the Atlantic. When the water recedes, the ocean leaves its wet and muddy bed to the children as a temporary playground. It is precisely at this moment that the match begins.</p>

In the shadow of the "Leomah Star"—a beached wooden fishing boat—children play against the ocean’s return. Mud, sweat, and the deep tracks etched into the sand by the ball all blend together. Here, every pass and every strike is directly bound to how much time remains before the next wave crashes against the shore.</p>

This pitch is not permanent. As the waters begin to rise, the second wave strikes the shore with far greater resolve. Sinking feet and splashing saltwater signal that the ocean is reclaiming its domain. The pitch closes. The incoming tide wipes away the muddy footprints and all physical evidence of the game, leaving behind only a coastline surrendered to the ocean until the next low tide.</p>

Against the monumental devastation of the event, it documents the physical endurance and the outer limits of exhaustion among the professionals working on the fireline.</p>

This photo selection serves as a visual record of an exhibition that reconstructs the anatomy of a bombed home.</p>

The collapsed ceilings and shattered walls are not merely art objects; they reflect the continuous reality of those living through war. The names etched into the rubble belong to Palestinian children who lost their lives beneath such wreckage. Far more than an artistic statement, the installation offers a memory chamber that summons back, name by name, lives reduced to mere statistics. Through this selection, I document that harrowing reality preserved within a reconstructed ruin.</p>

Lives in the Shadows: Albino Families in Tanzania

Tanzania, Morogoro. A place where skin color ceases to be a mere biological detail and draws the boundaries of survival. This narrative is built upon a sharp genetic contrast and two different practices of motherhood: on one side, a Black mother shielding her albino child from the sun and society; on the other, an albino mother consuming her own body in the fields to care for her Black children. This is not a story of victimhood; it is an account of two distinct survival strategies shaped by poverty, bodily toll, and genetic chance in an unforgiving landscape.</p>

Chapter I: Shelter and Vigil (Happiness Emanuel Mlugu)</h2>
Central Morogoro. A Black mother and her albino child sheltered in a single rented room after losing her husband. Here, the sun is not merely a climate condition, but a persistent threat. Happiness’s motherhood is an uninterrupted vigil confined between doorsteps and the narrow shade of courtyards. The reflex to protect her child from the scorching light and social isolation leaves the mother to face the harshness of the outside world entirely alone. The entire line of defense rests within a single room, on the shoulders of one woman.</p> </div>

Chapter II: Soil and Toll (Yudosya Valilian)</h2>
The hills of Bigwa. An earthen house without electricity or security. The place where the cliché of the 'dependent albino' collapses. Yudosya is an albino mother who took over the fields following her husband’s death. An unprotected body defying the sun to provide for her physically more resilient Black children. The severe lesions on Yudosya’s skin are not a mark of resignation, but the physical toll of working the land and holding on to life.</p> </div>

The Breath of the Eastern Black Sea: The Story of Making a Tulum

An instrument whose sound reaches across from one mountain village to the next when played, carrying both the sorrow and the exuberance of the Eastern Black Sea on its own: the Tulum. Yet behind this commanding breath lies an uncompromising crafting process where rulers and shortcuts have no place.</p>

"The Breath of the Eastern Black Sea" centers on the workshop of Baykan Bayraktutan, who mastered tulum-making entirely through his own perseverance and years of trial and error. The documentary captures the nineteen-stage curing of kidskin steeped in brine, the reed boiled until browned to withstand the relentless moisture of continuous blowing, and the millimeter-precise carving of the wood.</p>

Rather than offering a nostalgic ode to tradition, this project documents the arduous labor and patience demanded from the master as leather and wood transform into sound. In this workshop, where each tulum settles into tune through days of rigorous blowing tests, the stubborn and exacting nature of handicraft stands defiantly against the speed of mass production.</p>

Escape from the North: Burkina Faso Refugee Camps

Burkina Faso, meaning “Land of Honorable People,” is located in the heart of West Africa and, with a population of 22 million, is facing the most challenging struggle for survival in its modern history. After years of French colonial rule, it gained independence in 1960 under the name “Upper Volta.” With the 1983 revolution, it erased the traces of its colonial past and assumed its current identity. Since 2015, this land has been struggling to survive under the shadow of terrorism and conflict.</p>

Millions of people caught between terrorist organizations and government forces in the north have been forced to leave their homes and pasts behind, taking refuge in the country’s interior. The camps established in the Sogolzi, Yagma, Kaya, and Lindi regions are now the destinations of this forced migration. However, these places are not merely shelters; they are a limbo where there is no electricity, water is hauled from wells, and life is being rebuilt under primitive conditions.</p>

This photo selection documents life in the refugee camps, moving beyond mere statistics. It brings to light the lives trapped between the dust of the red soil and the white of the tents, the order established amidst deprivation, and the silent gazes waiting for the support of the international community.</p>

This section focuses on that simple cycle of life, where every drop of water and every bite of food is the reward for a never-ending physical struggle.</p> </div>

With the traditional marks on their faces, their dignified stance as they wait for news from their radios, and their resilience rooted in their faith, these portraits are a testament not to poverty, but to dignity. The eye contact established here removes them from being mere ‘victims’ and defines them as strong characters, owners of their own stories and resilience. The viewer will find not an expression of helplessness behind these gazes, but an honorable stance clinging to life.</p> </div>

Piles of colorful fabrics, mats spread on the ground, and modest meals shared in the dim light of the tent reveal the fragile yet warm ‘home’ order established within deprivation. These stone masses, which once shielded the city from external perils, now wage their own struggle for survival amidst unplanned urbanization and neglect. "Ramparts and Faces" brings together the heavy burden borne by this unique Byzantine heritage and the daily life that flows alongside it, clinging to the ramparts. The stark black-and-white aesthetic in the project is not merely a stylistic choice; it is a visual translation of the unyielding confrontation between the weight of historical texture and the devastation wrought by modern life. Transcending simple documentation, this series calls upon the viewer to trace the faces seeking shelter in the shadow of the walls and to confront our cultural memory on the brink of disappearance.</p>

Death in Nepal: Cremation at Pashupatinath

On the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, which divides Kathmandu, death is not hidden behind closed doors. The plumes of smoke rising from the stone steps (ghats) of Pashupatinath Temple bear tangible witness that in Hindu belief, life is not an ending, but an uninterrupted cycle of transition (samsara). Adorned with orange shrouds, marigold garlands, and crimson sindur powder, bodies are consecrated with the river’s waters by their families before being surrendered to the fire. This series does not ask the viewer for pity; instead, it observes with an impartial eye that inevitable threshold where grief and acceptance are purified by fire, right at the beating heart of daily life.</p>
