Each shift begins with a silent farewell at the doorstep, embracing loved ones. “Through the Fire” focuses on the uninterrupted cycle of life that begins after this farewell, lasting 24 hours at the station, where returning home is never guaranteed.
These people, sometimes seen by society as merely “hose holders,” actually perform one of the world’s most stressful jobs, requiring technical knowledge, experience, and great courage. They are, in the words of the literature, “firefighters whose weapon is a hose and whose ammunition is water.” From fires to traffic accidents, suicide attempts to natural disasters, they prioritize the goal of “rescue” over their own safety in a wide range of interventions.
The photographs reflect the determination of the Istanbul Fire Department team, whose only reward is the joy of saving a life. This project bears witness to the professional struggle of those who enter the heart of the flames without hesitation and the human sacrifice beneath their uniforms.
