Football Between Two Waves: Notes from Freetown

I’m on the coast of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Here, time isn’t dictated by the watch on my wrist, but by the rhythm of the Atlantic. Every time the ocean recedes, it leaves behind not just mud and wet sand, but a temporary “play permit” granted to the children.

In this mini-series, I wanted to document that narrow window of time the sea lends to children between two waves. The game, which begins in the rusty shadow of the “Leomah Star” boat, unfolds like a silent negotiation that lasts until the waters return. The field belongs to the ocean; its energy, however, lies with the children.

Amid the mud, the scent of salt, and the roar of approaching waves, I witnessed how enduring and fiercely passionate the game remained, despite the transience of the space. For me, these frames tell not just the story of a soccer match, but how humans fill the void left by nature with such joy.

The full series is now available.
